A Closer Look at Colon Cancer
The FDA has approved a disposable imaging device that features a miniature “rear view mirror” to help physicians who perform colonoscopies better detect polyps on both sides of the colon. Data from a national study show that the Third Eye Retroscope detected 13 percent more polyps and 10.0 percent more adenomas than a standard colonoscopy alone. Most colon cancers arise from adenomas. Removing each type of precancerous lesions prevents colon cancer.
Doctors are also using HDTV combined with new technology from Olympus called narrow band imaging to examine subtle changes in tissue color and texture when performing colonoscopies. The enhanced images may help reduce exam time and avoid unnecessary biopsies.
Colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable in most cases.
