All About Balance

Dear Dr. SerVaas,

I have a loss of balance, and doctors say the trouble is in my inner ear. There is a device called the BrainPort that is helping people with this problem, but it isn’t available in the United States. Is there something else that might help?

You are right to be concerned about balance problems. Falls may have devastating consequences. Have you tried exercises at local YMCAs and fitness centers that are designed to retrain the brain for better balance? Readers tell us that t’ai chi and other workouts that strengthen back and chest muscles help improve balance, strength, and posture.

The BrainPort device is being tested in research centers, including Missouri State University in Springfield. To learn more about the study, contact the principal investigator, Susan Robinson, at susanrobinson@missouristate.edu or at 417-836-6013. For other study sites, visit clinicaltrials.gov or send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to BrainPort Study, 1100 Waterway Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Other promising yet preliminary research suggests that whole body vibration (WBV) therapy may help restore balance and strength, especially among seniors.

My husband has had balance problems for 3 years but has been a lot worse the past year. Four ENT doctors have said it is not his ears. He went to a neurologist that said it is his ears. He also went to a vestibular physical therapist for 3 months and that did not help. He falls a lot, walks with a cane and his quality of life is not good. He has had 2 MRI and nothing shows for concern. He cannot go up and down stairs or any physical activity. He gets dizzy standing or walking. Can you please help us? He is 72 years old and mowed 9 yards a week up to a year ago and was very active. Thank you for any help. Myrna and Gilbert Morris

Call First, Act Later

One of the most rewarding parts of my work as a

Be Careful with Coumadin

Warfarin (Coumadin), a prescription drug used to
prevent blood clots, saves countless lives. However, many drugs and supplements (even common pain
medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen) can intensify its anti-clotting effect and put patients at risk of excessive bleeding. When Coumadin therapy is indicated, give your doctor—and your pharmacist—a comprehensive list of your prescription drugs, [...]
