Now that America drew its first round game against England, (against the backdrop of British anger with Obama bloviating on BP), Americans may embrace football with their feet.

Hey, rest assured that the flubbed goal will keep Brits miserable for at least one hundred years.

Great article! Nothing infuriates me more than hearing the same old tired lines from stubborn Americans like, "soccer is dumb." I can understand why some people might not embrace a new sport (new to them), but what drives one to verbally attack the beautiful game and its athletes with such ridiculous and vicious comments? American ignorance is at its highest levels when it comes to this sport. I'm thrilled to see ESPN making the most of the event.

Don't see how taking a swipe (gentle though it may be) at the "ideals of the hands-on, blue-collar American worker" will make soccer any more interesting to us--or popular.
While soccer probably will eventually "catch on" in the states, we yanks are kind of funny; we hate having things shoved down their throats--whether it be an international sport, or socialized medicine.

With the World Cup probably coming to the USA in 2018 we need articles like this to wake up Americans to the enormous political and economic ramifications of the World Cup. Thank you for this great introduction.
