My near-death experience occurred on December 24, 1979. In many ways, that fateful Christmas Eve seems as if it happened only last week. This apparent timelessness may well be due to my still feeling somewhat connected to the “Other Side”–a magnificent, indescribable place.

While I won’t go into what precipitated my temporary death, I will say it turned out to be the most positive, most life-enhancing, most transformative event of my life.

Those who’ve been blessed with an NDE know that, as we are dying, frustrations, rivalries, petty jealousies disappear; ambitions fade; doubts and fears no longer affect. Pain, suffering–even death, itself–pass away.

All that is remembered, all that remains, or matters–all that can be taken on this trip–is love.

Sweet, sole survivor, love, is the universal currency. And firsthand, unshakeable knowledge of such a precious principle is the greatest gift I have ever received.

The worst gift I ever received was a framed picture of a pig.
