The spotlight did not come by choice,
But in the White House she did choose
To speak out with a forthright voice
On issues that had been taboos.
The public found her a class act,
Welcome like a breath of fresh air,
With wit and charm to perk her fact
On ups and downs she chose to share.
A dancer from her younger days,
She danced into the heart and mind,
In her honest and open ways.
A first lady - one of a kind.

First lady Betty Ford has died.
Once again she's at Jerry's side.

Betty Ford was a truly genuine 'true to herself person.' I remember quite well the tongue wagging her remarks set off--but now she has gone down in history as one of our best.

I was so impressed with Betty Ford`s interview in the 1976 sixty minutes interview, I almost changed my party affiliation.
I followed her and what she had to say in the media every chance I could.
When she disclosed her addiction problems it had such an influence on me that I went into rehab for my alcohol and valium addiction in 1978 and have' t had a drink or mind altering drug since.
Thanks Mrs. Ford and may you rest in peace.

Betty Ford was an outspoken First Lady, and was well liked. But I don't believe the views she expressed were shared by the majority of Americans. Most Americans, even women, did not support the equal rights amendment. Most mothers wouldn't seem so uninterested if their daughters had affairs or tried drugs.

Although I respect the opinions of Betty Ford, I do not have to agree with them. If something is morally wrong it doesn't matter if it is performed in a backalley shack or a modern day hospital, wrong is wrong. If you do not believe that life begins at conception then we part ways. Let God be the judge. He is the One we will have to answer for our actions and beliefs. Thank you for allowing to express my thougths. Bro.Dominic Lococo OFM

Betty Ford, without question, is one of my very favorite First Ladies; right between Jackie Kennedy and Lady Bird Johnson. Mrs. Ford was a very gracious, kind woman who was open and honest about her own problems that a lot of people were going through. Addiction is something that affects men as much as women, and she made it okay to talk about, and get help for it; that it was nothing to be ashamed of. It IS sad the country had to go through Watergate, of course, but maybe that's what had to happen to for the stars to align to allow this wonderful woman to come into our lives.

Betty Ford is my kind of woman! She tells it like it is and does not mince words. I have a lot of respect for her and people like her. We need more people to be honest and upfront about everything, The politicians and lots of everyday people today are dishonest, corrupt and only out for what they can get for themselves. This is a wonderful time to remember people like Betty Ford. Thank you so much.
