Two or thjree years ago, at a used book sale, I bought a copy of a book containing Poe's "The Black Cat". The limited edition, named simply "POE" was published by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company for Christmas, 1964. I confess I bought it primarily because of it's reference to a paper mill in Covington, West Virgina--my home state. (I was born in Wheeling, W.Va.) The book contains 3 additional tales by Poe (The Gold Bug, The Purloined Letter and The Balloon Hoax). The Foreward points to Bradbury Thompson's "noteworthy" design concepts as representing those more commonly used in the 1840s. I was particularly struck by the design he used for the slip case, still in perfect condition and covered with flying green bats and pigs on an ivory background. The book is full of wonderful illustrations related to each tale. "The Black Cat" has 19 creative graphics.
