I was in high school in the early 1940's and dated the son of a local doctor. His wife "donated" some of her out-dated evening gowns to me. I still had those gowns in 1944 when my future husband invited me to a military ball. I ripped apart a black gown and redesigned the top into a "one-shoulder bare" design that had people stopping me on the dance floor to ask where I purchased it.

I know little or nothing about design. I just had the courage to try something new. Where did that courage go? I think old age and experience swept it right out the door.

The visor-cone of shame...no woman would have designed that!
Great article, and interesting to see the jewel tones of seasons past making their way into our closets once again.

Maude could not decide what to wear.
The dress made by Christian Dior.
That short hemline made for more air,
A handmade chic masterpiece, or
The dress made by Coco Chanel,
A hand stitched black beauty, ah yes,
That fit the body oh so well.
Or the Oleg Cassini dress,
A garment of elegant state.
And so Maude decided instead,
Ev'ry few months they would rotate
Each dress on her body, though dead.

This was per Maude's will, doncha know,
All dressed up and no place to go.
