Josephine Bogash took her son,
Billy, to the Roller Derby.
They both thought it was so much fun,
And skated into history,
As "Ma" and "Flash" - oh what a team,
Rolling the roller pro circuit,
Living the American dream,
Grabbing the gusto, nothing but.
The Roller Derby Hall of Fame,
Ma was inducted - first female,
And the next year rolling Flash came,
A mother/son thing without fail.

Ma and Flash Bogash skated to
A dreamworld that for them came true.

Most kids did the same. Wooden wheels were the rage, not iron or plastic.

What a fascinating feature on Women and Roller Derby! It should well be remembered that the still gorgeous Raquel Welch immortalized the sport in the 1972 film, 'The Kansas City Bomber'.

My younger sister and I had a blast here in California watching the women of the L.A. T-Birds battle it out on TV back in 1973 and '74. The men were good too, but none of them could touch the women for toughness, roughness OR entertainment, trust me!

When I was a young girl, my mom and I used to go to the roller derby almost evry night in Buffalo at the aud. The 3 players mentioned were indeed a ruff and ready group. It made the fights and rivalry worth the price of the ticket. Those were the fun days.

Wow, does this article take me back. I won't say how many years . . . but it brought back memories of early television roller derbies. Those gals weren't very nice to each other but then, I imagine their actions made for good t.v. What an interesting article! Thanks for sharing it with us.
