As the niece of a POW who was with Fr Kapaun in the camp when he died, I am happy to see this article. Fr Kapaun was a saintly man who was a spirtual and courag eous guide to all who came in contact with him. He deserves the honors that will be bestowed upon him. I have had the priviledge of spending time in Pilsen and in Wichita, Ks where Fr spent his childhood. It was a wonderful experence. Thank you for publishing this great article.

My great uncle, Warrant Officer Felix McCool, USMC was one on the last POWs to see Father Kapaun. It is my understanding that Father Kapaun is in the process of sainthood with the church. Felix couldn’t say enough good about the Father nor hold him in higher regard. Thank you for an excellent article.

Being a Korean myself, Father Kapaun’s super-human deeds more than 60 years ago gives an awkening moment and a great appreciation to him. He was a true image of self-sacrefice and utmost love for all of us Korean especially.
I was a middle school student at the time of Father Kapaun’s great ordeal and I fought in Vietnam back in 1965-66 as a Korean army captain, infantry. There, I witnessed Chaplains’ valuable works and non-combatant, who served greater than than any other combatans themselves. Chaplains are great source of “esprit” and courage to the line soldiers no matter which army they belong. Humbly, I would dedicate Father Kapaun a prayer and deep respect.

The place – Korea, the time – war.
He went to serve U.S. and God,
A chaplain in the front line’s gore.
Captured by enemy death squad.
To caught comrades, he gave them all
The hope and faith that he could give.
He answered to a higher call
To help his fellow comrades live.
His spirit strong, but body weak.
Ills engulfed and crushed out his breath.
To his last comrades he did speak,
“Tell them I died a happy death.”

He lived and died within war’s hell.
Emil J. Kapaun served good well.
