Here’s to the also-rans of history. The lesser known brands. The under-appreciated products that have earned life-long fans, thought not enough of them to stay in business.
Here’s to the Hydrox cookie (1908—2003, revived briefly in 2008). Even though it preceded the Oreo, there was a common perception that Hydrox was the imitation, not the original.
Its many fans claim that it was altogether superior to the Oreo: less sweet and slower to lose its crunch when dunked in milk. Unless the recipe is revived someday by its owner, Kellogg’s, the taste of a Hydrox cookie will be one of those lost pleasures of our past, and grandchildren will roll their eyes when we tell them of its superiority to the common Oreo.

I never knew this about Hydrox cookies before. I didn’t realize they were gone. As far as this ad goes I would think they were Sunshine cookies if I didn’t know better, or enough to look at the name on the cookie itself.
I agree. Hydrox was better.
I miss my Hydrox cookies. Far superior to Oreo. They were my mother’s favorites, so I ate them growing up. I became very attached to my poor Hydrox. When they were no longer on the shelves, I searched for them in three different supermarkets until it occurred to me that I should ask about them at the customer service desk. Alas, they were gone, never to return! I want them back!
