I was feeling sorry for my car engine in this weather. Then I came across this ad from the American Locomotive Company that reminded me how merciful automation can be.
Tens of thousands of [horses] died in a few days from the blistering sun a year ago. In one week 1,200 alone perished in the streets of New York City.
While on the subject of hot-weather advertising, I thought I’d throw in this item for the Autocrat, made by Oldsmobile (now in its 14th year!)

I just find the thought of horses (especially THAT many) dying in and from the heat to be be one of the most horrible things I’ve ever heard of. I’m really shocked and saddened to know that this actually happened. I can’t even process this mentally right now–or ever. Reading the ALCO headline today seems very harsh and cruel. Of course a metal/steel truck wouldn’t falter, where a flesh and blood horse would. But, from the standpoint of 100+ years ago I guess it would not have been. I suppose it took that to happen to SAVE future horses from the same fate. That thought is the only good thing I can take away from this.
I love the Oldsmobile ‘Autocrat’ ad. The artwork is beautiful, and the model name itself was very clever, blending the word auto with power. I could only read the top paragraph and it’s very well written. Hopefully the public just saw the name in this context and NOT the definition referencing a ruler having unlimited authority or an oppressive and cruel dictator.
