For many baby boomers, she had become an icon of more innocent times.

First on television’s The Mickey Mouse Club and later in numerous Beach Party movies, Annette Funicello came to embody the idea of the wholesome American girl, forever associated with youth.

So many Americans were dismayed to hear in the late 1980s that she was struggling with multiple sclerosis.

In 1992, she agreed to an interview with the Post and talked about her determination to not let her MS dominate her life. Her death today, 21 years later, shows how strong her determination was.
