In Elizabeth Svoboda’s article “The Bionic Man is Real!” (July/August 2013), psychiatrist, engineer, and researcher at the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute Todd Kuiken discusses his newest contribution to the field of prosthetic medicine—a device that connects with the human nervous system using remaining nerves and muscles in the patient’s chest to control movement and even provide sensations of touch and pressure.

In July 2011, he demonstrated a prosthetic arm’s surprising capabilities during a TEDTalk with the help of his patient, Amanda Kitts.
