(1889) – The Columbia Phonograph Company was formed in Washington, D.C. Today Columbia remains a premier subsidiary label of Sony Music Entertainment.
(1959) – A mine near Pittston City, Pennsylvania in Port Griffith is breached by water. Twelve miners were killed in what is known as the Knox Mine Disaster.
(1984) – The first Apple Macintosh, the first consumer computer with a mouse and graphical user interface was introduced. Famously, the computer appears in a Super Bowl XVII television commercial.
(2002) – Kmart Corporation files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and becomes the largest American retailer to do so.
