(1848) – A gold nugget was found in Northern California by James W. Marshall leading to the gold rush of 1849.
(1968) – CBS-TV and the National Football League’s came to an exclusive rights agreement to show the 1964-1965 regular season only on CBS. The move cost CBS $14.1 million a year. The NFL stayed on CBS for 30 years.
(1986) – The Voyager 2 space probe flew past Uranus. The probe came within 51,000 miles of the planet. It remains in space along with it’s predecessor, Voyager 1.
(2003) – The new federal Department of Homeland Security officially began operation. Tom Ridge was sworn in as secretary as part of President George W. Bush’s cabinet.
