Letters
How Old Is She?
Post Staff
Something puzzled me concerning a letter in the Sept./Oct. issue of the SatEvePost. The writer of the letter, who said he was 90 years old, said that his mother still takes the Ladies' Home Journal. How old is she? I really enjoy The Saturday Evening Post, especially the medical section.

Editor's note: We also wondered, so we wrote to Mr. Andrews and received this reply:

Thank you for your letter to our father, Melvin Andrews, Jr. His mail is presently being forwarded to my address. I shared this with my brother, and how surprised we were to read your correspondence. We were not privy to the letter Daddy sent to you, but it sounds like he got the words "wife" and "mother" in the wrong place. Sorry for the confusion.

Both of our parents are 90 years of age, and Daddy has been a salesman all his life.

In the early 1920s, Daddy's mother supplied some Nashville newsstands and drugstores with The Saturday Evening Post.

A few years ago Daddy wrote quite a few pages of his life's recollections, and I hope you do not mind if I share the portion about the Post. He wrote:

"In the early 1920s, on the corner of Third and Union in Nashville, there were tall buildings on all four corners. I went to every floor and office, to develop my route. Then I worked my way up to the Church Street office buildings. After several weeks, I had about 60 regular customers. One day a customer asked if I wanted to make my sales job easy. He said, 'First thing to do was to look at the contents pages to see what were the best articles, and then tell your customers what articles were in the Post that week. This will show them you know something about what you are selling.' I never forgot this good advice during my sales career."

Hope you enjoy this recollection of him and his mother selling your wonderful magazine all those years ago.
