Joan, an energetic and efficient young career woman, was overworked and underpaid. Yet each time she asked her boss for a raise, he would roar like a sorrowful sea lion. Then he invariably began an endless chant about the wonderful experience she was getting, the many business tricks she was learning, the responsibility he gave her, and the valuable contacts she was making.
Finally, however, another firm realized Joan's worth and offered her a job at almost double her current salary. When Joan told her boss about the new job, he looked at her reproachfully. Hadn't she any loyalty? he asked in a hurt tone. Did she put no value on all the training and experience he was giving her?
He paused and sighed. "Money," he said heavily, "isn't everything, you know."
"That's right," Joan said briskly. "But I've had everything else. Now I want money."
