Patients of any age may benefit from clot-buster therapy for stroke, according to Swiss researchers. In a recent study, doctors say that stroke severity, blood sugar levels, and time until treatment--but not age--predicted the rate of favorable outcome among 325 patients treated with tPA (tissue plasminogen activator). Among the study participants, 38 were older than 80; others ranged in age from 14 to 79, with an average age of 63. At three months, the rate of favorable outcome was similar in both groups--42 percent in the older set and 43 percent in the younger one.
