Dear Dr. SerVaas: I have dozens of whiteheads over most of my chin, forehead, cheeks, and nose. These whiteheads do not become inflamed or turn red. I am a 73-year-old woman. Can you help me?

"Whiteheads, or closed comedones, sometimes become problematic as we get older. The causal factors include heredity and past history of sun exposure. The best treatment is usually extraction (acne surgery). Superficial chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and topical retinoids can help prevent recurrence. However, periodic extraction may be necessary."
