Advice to Bipolars: Don't Give Up
Published: May/June 2004
Dear Dr. SerVaas: In the Jan./Feb. 2004 "Medical Mailbox," you stated that Lamictal is "safe and effective in preventing mood swings in people with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder." I couldn't agree with you more, as I've been on it for over four years now and I've noticed a remarkable improvement in my mood swings. In the article, Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison said, "Once you learn what you are living with, you are less prone to commit suicide." This comment reminded me of my doctor who told me something similar 30 years ago. He basically said that I won't always feel this way, which gave me much hope. I felt like I wasn't at a dead end, Some people think that they'll never get well, and that suicide is the only option. I would say to them, "Be patient and don't give up."
