Grover's Disease Update
By Cory SerVaas, M.D.
Published: January/February 2001

Dear Dr. SerVaas: In the July/August 2000 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, I read a letter from someone who has Grover's disease. I believe I have it also. I tried many medications without relief.

If you have any more information, I would be very thankful to receive it. I am 82 years old.

Dear Reader: We are pleased to pass along the following information about Grover's disease from Post readers.

Jean Croft, Chattanooga, Tennessee: I believe I may also have Grover's disease. It is quite intolerable, and I sympathize with Mr. Bolks. This morning, I came across a tube of Aspercreme in my dressing table drawer and tried it. It seems to be working.

Brian Stern, Seattle, Washington: I discovered by accident that Sportscreme nearly healed my skin overnight. I had lived in torment for seven years. Someone would say it was hives, the next would say it was Grover's disease. If you are allergic to aspirin, you can't use this product, but it helped me so much I wanted to pass along my experience.

Cynthia Gibbon, San Diego, California: I have found that a half-cup of baking soda in the bathwater is helpful for Grover's disease. I have fewer outbreaks, and they are less itchy. After my bath, I dab the spots with an antiseptic or Australian tea tree oil.

My daughter-in-law is having the same problem and believes it is due to stress. She may be right. I wouldn't wish this Grover's thing on my worst enemy--on second thought, I just might!

Louisa Johnson, Westminster, Colorado: There is a prescription medication by the name of Lac-Hydrin 12 percent cream that works real well for Grover's disease. This medication is quite expensive, but it relieves the itching and burning. Mr. Bolks should have whatever would make his life more pleasant.
