That was 3500 old valentines, of which a dozen appear on this page. And he collects valentines because he sold papers in front of City Hall. These are the links in the chain: His daily customers aroused his interest in American politics; to understand politics, he studied American his- tory; history gave him a passionate patriotism; and his patriotism expressed itself in the determination to preserve historical items. He couldn't purchase those momentous mementoes which a museum better enshrines, so he began sifting the dust heap of the past for unconsidered trifles.
