That meeting was attended by some 22,000 bundsmen and their sympathizers. These activities and the propaganda which they spread all appear to be within the law. But that, as various official declarations indicate, allows plenty of latitude. According to its formal description of itself, the Bund is "a militant organization of patriotic Americans." Its little folder of purposes and aims begins with the customary embrace of "the Constitution, Flag and Institutions of these United States of America." But after that unimpeachable beginning it gets down to business with a long list of the things which it is out to "zealously combat, unequivocally oppose," and "uncompromisingly fight." Among these items are: "all Atheistic Teachings and all abuse of the pulpits designed to undermine the Morals, Ethics or Patriotism of Americans; all Racial Intermixture between Aryans (White Gentiles) and Asiatics, Africans or other non-Aryans; all Subversive Internationalism, the liberal-pacifistic forces undermining the morale of Youth, Aliencontrolled, international So-called Labor Movements, the Rackets of International Finance." Its peroration is a call for union "with all Americans defending Aryan Culture and Code of Ethics on which this Nation was founded, helping to build a great American Movement of Liberation, under the Swastika, the common Symbol of the Defenders of Aryan Nationalism . . . in order that the dictatorship of a small, racially and ethically-alien Jewishinternational minority, to which the mind of the entire nation is rapidly being subjected, may be broken." All this, of course, is official and therefore restrained. There is less restraint in the unofficial statements of some of the Bund leaders. Fritz Kuhn, speaking to his own, never refers to them as German- Americans but as American-Germans. "Hitler," says Kuhn, "has shown the whole world a new idea in government—a good idea. We, as American- Germans, must stand with him like they are doing in Germany." One of the Bund's national speakers recently declared: "Our whole program at this moment has just one aim—to unite all German-Americans under the Bund banners and then bring National Socialism to replace democracy in the United States." So revolutionary a prospect calls for stern preparations. The Bund is preparing. A Long Island leader, addressing his storm troops at one of last summer's meetings, declared: " Exactly what happened some years ago is happening now in this country. In Germany, the people finally rose up in resentment. This will happen PICTURES, INC. Note the automatic stuck in the belt of George W. When that day comes, and it is probably not far off, we must be prepared to fight for the right kind of government. We must win the masses to our side. There will be bloodshed and fighting. We shall have to do our part. In all likelihood, the day of trouble will come—der Tag—with a financial crisis in Washington. Then will be the time to wipe out our enemies." "Don't worry," one of its speakers recently pointed out; "when the time comes, our ranks will swell overnight. There are many other Kameraden waiting to join us at that moment." When der Tag arrives, the Bund's young men will probably be the first on the barricades. But there is nothing in its program, either of venom or of violence, that cannot be matched in the propaganda of more authentically American groups. The star-spangled Kameraden are also ready. Somewhere near the top among these organizations are the Silver Shirts. The Silver Shirts have their national headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina—to the rather general discomfiture of Asheville's citizens—and their founder, leader and metaphysician is William Dudley Pelley. Pelley is diminutive, helped somewhat toward dignity by gray hair and a well-tended Vandyke. He smokes, in turn, pipes, cigars and cigarettes, and the smoke cloud that fills his dark-paneled, dimly lighted office is an impressive part of the setting. On the occasion of my unscheduled visit he was exceedingly hospitable and through an entire afternoon told a smooth, coherent story. The Silver Shirt Creed AT ONE time Pelley was a moderately suc- cessful writer of fiction, and at another period he served the missionary board of the Methodist Church for a brief spell in the Far East. While he was in the Orient the aftermath of the Russian Revolution came under his observation and his "eyes began to open" to the menace of the Reds. Later, in the United States, further eye openers—credited, by him, to providence and, by some others, to his association with the Nazis—convinced him that back of the Communists were the Jews—not some Jews but Jewry. Anti-Semitism, ever since, has been his passion and his meal ticket. The world, to Pelley, contains no evil that does not have a Jew at the root of it. and I gathered from my conversation (Continued on Page 70) ACME Violent antirSemitism is the passion and meal ticket of William Dudley Pelley, leader of the Silver Shirts.
