The wisdom teeth have nothing to do with wisdom, and the eye-teeth have nothing to do with the eyes. A SAFE TOOTH POWDER Pro-phy-lac-tic The formula and all advertising claims made for Pro-phy-lac-tic Brand Tooth Powder were examined by the Council on Dental Therapeutics, of the American Dental Association, before it was awarded the Association seal. We believe this is the kind of powder which dentists would prefer you to use because the American Dental Association represents 4o.000 members of the dental profession. The seal signifies that this dentifrice has been "accepted" as SAFE FOR CLEANING TEETH. We believe that the delightful flavor will add greatly to the pleasure of brushing. Two sizes. 25r and 40c. Unable to get it sponsored he returned to Chattanooga, convinced that there was neither hope nor health in the upper reaches of American society, and determined, henceforth, to devote himself to the lower. The White Shirts, the American Reds, the Crusaders for Economic Liberty, the Fifty Million Club, all flowered from that resolve. Although he is counted one of the fraternity, Christians is looked upon by some of his colleagues as dangerous. He makes no bones about his belief that violence has to come in the United States, or of his hope that it will come soon. On his desk, when I visited him, he had a full-sized brick with a sticker on it of the Crusaders for Economic Liberty. I asked for an explanation. "Well," he said, "we don't tell our boys to throw bricks through the windows— not yet. But we tell them that if they do—be sure to put our stickers on them." Christians gave me a list of recent incidents in which his followers had had shooting scrapes with the officers of the law, and when I left he handed me a printed plan which, he said, had just been sent to his state organizers. It contained detailed instructions as to how to take over when the revolution comes. The National Gentile League, Inc., is only a little less belligerent than the White Shirts, and Donald Shea, its founder, is almost as unrestrained as Christians. Shea, who is out to defend "Gentile Culture against Communist- Bolshevist Slavery," says that his Vigilante Committees are already organized in every fair-sized city in the country. " When the time comes," he told me, "we'll mix with the Jews and the Reds in whatever kind of a fight they call for." The Gentile League is organized by states, in lodges. According to Shea, there are 117 mother lodges in the United States, each of which has several local lodges under it. He claims to have fifty-eight lodges in Canada. There are no dues. The na tional organization is directed by an executive council of twelve members. Behind the Evangelical Front Shea was noncommittal about his own background, and his apartment in Washington indicated that, unlike some of those in the business, his take was not substantial. He denied that he had anything more than a sympathetic tie with the Nazis. But he did say that he helped to circulate Nazi literature, and one wall of his cluttered office was undecoratively papered with newspaper clippings of the photographs and headlines of the recently held Bund mass meeting in Madison Square Garden. Close to Shea's organization is the American Gentile Protective Association, which has its headquarters in Chicago and nine or ten branches throughout the country. In the same category is the American Gentile Youth Movement, one of the recent activities of which was the national distribution of a sticker for use on the doors or windows of Jewish places of business. The sticker reads, in part: "To have peace and prosperity forever, each nation must kill its own Jews. When the last hour for the Jew in America strikes, there will be no passover. Jews, America is your last mile !" Not all these organizations go by any such forthright names. Some of them, like the Christian American Crusade, of Los Angeles; the Christian Consti- tutional Party, of San Francisco; the Christian Democrats, of Dallas; the Christian Protective League, of Mobile, Alabama; and the American Christian Defenders, of New York, have a strictly evangelical front. Last August, the Militant Christian Patriots and its auxiliary, the American League of Christian Women—both California organizations—arranged a three-day anti-Communist Conference in Los Angeles. The meeting was held in the Deutsches Haus—a place which has come under some official suspicion as a center for Nazi espionage on the West Coast. Chairman of the meeting was Hermann Schwinn, California Blind leader, whose citizenship papers have been recently investigated by the Government. The meeting, as reported in The Christian Free Press, official organ of the Christian Patriots, rang all the customary changes and made the usual friendly gestures to the Nazis. The keynote, however, appears to have been struck by a Reverend Doctor Mitchell, who declared, to rounds of applause: "I am persuaded that it is possible for a person of the Israelite race to be a Christian and to be an American, but I am further persuaded that it is hard to find one." Plenty of Money From Somewhere There is no complete roster of the organizations which share the general objectives of those which I have described. There are scores of them which, for distinctions of one kind or another, deserve description. Some, like the American National Committee, of Chicago, the National Socialist Party, of New York, and the American National Labor Party, have definite, probably organic, connections with the Nazis in this country. Others, like the National Liberal Party, of Tacoma, Washington, are only indebted to Fascism for some of their ideas. Where their money comes from is still a large question. The Communists insist that it comes from wealthy Redbaiters, and some of the Fascists with whom I talked admitted that they had lucrative connections. In the membership organizations some money, but hardly enough, is paid in in dues. Organizations which have a direct tie-in to the Nazis are said to receive subsidies from Germany — the money smuggled in from German ships. Whatever the source from which the funds are wangled, they manage to finance a steady and voluminous flow of literature. Many of them have their own weekly, semi-monthly or monthly publications. They are all pamphleteers. In the course of my visits to their various offices, I accumulated not less than 250 different leaflets, pamphlets, periodicals and books, all relatively fresh from the press. That number is probably only a small fraction of the total in current circulation. According to one estimate, one third of all the families in the country are receiving literature of this sort with some degree of regularity. In addition to their written propaganda, almost all the leaders of this movement are chronic speechmakers. If the schedules of those with whom I have talked are fair samples, then the total of meetings, public and private, which are held each year in the interest of one or another of the various aspects of American Fascism must be a nearastronomical figure. These, obviously, are the techniques of mass arousement. But there are a number of important organizations which are dedicated exclusively to the THE distinctive, different feature of the Pro-phy-lac-tic Tooth Brush is the famous tuft . . . which helps you do an amazingly better job of cleaning the molars (back teeth). These teeth need much attention, yet frequently are neglected, because they are hard to reach and clean with an ordinary tooth brush. Feel the difference in polishing the molars, when you brush with the tufted Pro-phy-lac-tic. Also feel how gentle Pro-phy-lac-tic bristle is to your gums. The reason? Pro-phy-lac-tic bristle is all genuine . . . not synthetic or imitation . . . but Nature's own genuine bristle. It really "takes hold" on the teeth. If you like a medium size brush, ask for the ADULT Regular. For a smaller brush, ask for the ADULT Small-Type. Either is 506; with money-back guarantee of satisfaction.
