Mike Davies, who is the game's most knowledgeable individual, had in August 1970 been appointed WCT Executive Director. He took refuge in a hotel room and for three days sat there alone—speaking to no one but room service waiters—until he figured out a way that our competition could become truly meaningful. He called Al and me to another of those path-seeking meetings, and we had no idea what he might propose. "I want a million dollars," Mike said. "The million is just for prize money. We also have to go out and sign players. The best and biggest names. They'll want guarantees against winnings. So you have to be prepared to guarantee another million or . . . two." Mike's proposal was that WCT would sign up thirtytwo of the world's finest professionals and they would play related tournaments with cumulative point standings each week. The eight players with the most points would compete in a season-ending event to determine a true World Champion of Tennis. There had been many pro competitions in the past. But they were all unrelated events, and few people really knew who the best players were—in effect, there was no real championship. Mike's plan, if we bought it, would mean that for the first time all the events would relate one to another. Each tournament would have the same players. prize money, and standings through a point system for every event. He wanted to have twenty events, each with $50,000 prize money. At that time, this was an unheard of figure. To climax the WCT schedule, we would have the eight-player finals with the winner re- ceiving $50,000—the largest single prize money ever offered in the history of tennis. To bail us out, Mike believed that we could find commercial sponsors in twenty cities around the world to provide the prize money in their cities.
