Or, You Could Just Make a Snowman with It

Do I eat snow? No, because Frank Zappa told us not to.

But apparently Reese Witherspoon does. In fact, she makes her Chococinno chocolate/coffee drinks with it (she scoops the snow off of her car), and her recipe has caused an internet uproar (people are always in an uproar online for some reason). Is snow safe to eat, or are there too many pollutants and other nasty things in it?

Today is on the case! They asked an expert.

This wouldn’t be an issue if Reese just drank hot chocolate in the winter like most people do.

Space Update

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you about the remains and/or DNA of famous people who were sent into space, where they would be placed on the moon for eternity? Well … things didn’t go as planned.

Winston Churchill’s Teeth Are for Sale

Some people collect stamps, some people collect action figures. But I’m sure there’s somebody out there who collects famous teeth.

Quote of the Week

“We strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits.”

– Roseville, California police on the theft of Stanley cups (no, not that one)

RIP Charles Osgood, Norman Jewison, Peter Schickele, Mary Weiss, Laurie Johnson, and Frank Farian

Charles Osgood was the bow-tie-wearing CBS anchorman, reporter, and host of CBS Sunday Morning and the long-running CBS radio show The Osgood File. He died Tuesday at the age of 91.

He not only wrote several articles and light verse for the Post, he delivered the magazine when he was a kid.

Norman Jewison directed such films as Fiddler on the Roof, Moonstruck, Jesus Christ Superstar, In the Heat of the Night, The Cincinnati Kid, Rollerball, and the original The Thomas Crown Affair. He died Saturday at the age of 97.

Peter Schickele was better known as the musical parodist P.D.Q. Bach but he also wrote serious concert and chamber music over a long, prolific career that included several Grammys. He died last week at the age of 88.

Mary Weiss was the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, known for the song “Leader of the Pack.” She died last week at the age of 75.

Laurie Johnson was a British composer who did music for such TV shows as The Avengers, The Professionals, Thriller, and the UK version of This is Your Life, and movies like Dr. Strangelove and First Men in the Moon. He also did one of my favorite instrumentals. He died last week at the age of 96.

Frank Farian was the producer mastermind behind the fake singing duo Milli Vanilli. He died Tuesday at the age of 82.

This Week in History

Apple’s Macintosh Introduced (January 24, 1984)

Here’s Steve Jobs introducing the personal computer that changed everything (mostly for the better, though there’s also social media uproars about drinks made with snow).

This Week in Saturday Evening Post History: Log Cabin Syrup (January 20, 1940)

“Just what us men always go for!”

Sunday is National Blueberry Pancake Day

Pancakes seem like an autumn/winter thing to me. Yes, I know you can eat them any time of the year, but pancakes to me means crisp mornings and cozy kitchens and the smell of maple, and those are things more suited for January than July.

All Recipes has Todd’s Famous Blueberry Pancakes. I don’t know who Todd is but his wife swears by these pancakes and they have a rating of 4.4 out of 5.

If you’re looking for blueberry pancakes with a little something extra, My Weekend Kitchen has these Cranberry and Blueberry Pancakes, Parade has Blueberry and Walnut Pancakes, and Ambitious Kitchen has Fluffy Greek Yogurt Blueberry Pancakes with Strawberry Maple Syrup.

Next Week’s Holidays and Events

Australian Open Finals (January 27 and 28)

The women’s final airs on ESPN Saturday morning at 3:30 a.m. ET, and the men’s final airs at the same time and place on Sunday.

Groundhog Day (February 2)

Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow, which will mean six more weeks of eating snow? Place your bets now!

  1. Like so many other food & drink products, Log Cabin has changed its recipe over time where it no longer tastes as good as it did years ago. You may as well use dark Karo Syrup. It tastes the same. Honestly, there is nothing like pure 100% maple syrup to top off pancakes, waffles, hot oatmeal, etc.

  2. Zappa’s advice is right, for those that would need to be told: “Watch out where the Huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow!” Reese Witherspoon has nothing to worry about. I like where she admitted drinking water from the garden hose years ago.

I did it too, also rode my bike without a helmet, even walked a few blocks by myself to and from school in the kindergarten. People now would be “retro-shaming” my mother for all of it on social media; melting like the wicked witch of the west. Good. they’re airheads anyway.

Not surprised regarding the space update. I suppose there IS someone out there that collects famous teeth, or would pay an ungodly sum to acquire them. My own collections are more conventional. I’ve cut WAY back on the 1:24 & 1:18 scale ($140) diecast cars. The two 1:12 ’57 Bel-Air convertibles (red & turquoise) from 2004 do damn near everything, as they should at $500 each! They go for over twice that amount now on eBay.

Charles Osgood also delivered the Post when he was a kid. At 10 and 11 in 1968, maybe I could’ve too. It would have been just in the nick of time. Some of those covers were something else, featuring a burning draft card, a girl shoplifting, and Faye Dunaway. 10 years later I had a good summer job delivering things, that included the occasional movie star—and she was one of them. Answered the door herself, very nice, AND gave me a nice tip!

So Sunday’s National Blueberry Pancake Day. Sounds wonderful. Love the ad you selected here. Ads in this conversational style with the friendly and inviting artwork just make you WANT to buy Log Cabin syrup over the others; am I right, Bob? Of course. Get those hotcakes off of that griddle onto that plate, then the melting butter with Log Cabin syrup! It’s just what us men always go for.

  3. I was introduced to PDQ Bach (the albums) back in my college days. Just great comedy. Fun to listen and comes with great stories. I forgot about Peter Schickele and PDQ Bach because he/they are never mentioned anymore and comedy has gone in a different direction. I miss the comedy and storytelling of the 60’s and 70’s. RIP friendly professor.
