When proposing he’ll make a big scene
Like an actor on some silver screen.
So she’d better think twice:
Life might not be so nice
If she’s married to this drama queen!

Congratulations to Brian Federico of Clyde, New York! He wins $25 for his witty limerick describing this Frederic Stanley illustration.

If you’d like to enter the Limerick Laughs Contest for our upcoming issue, submit your limerick via our online entry form.

Here are more of our other favorite entries to this limerick contest, in no particular order:

A clueless but well-suited suitor
Developed a crush on his tutor.
He professed to her chair
While her picture was there,
But she opted for someone much cuter.
—Julie Barsel Bergman, Newington, Connecticut

As he sang with mellifluous calm,
Dreamt of holding the ring in his palm,
He suddenly froze
’Cause in the framed pose
Was a rather young photo of Mom.
—Ann Crick, Islip, New York

When the passionate love he’s proclaimed
Is rejected and spurned, who’ll be blamed?
You may say that the miss
Bears the onus of this,
But it’s hardly her fault — she’s been framed!
—Jeff Foster, San Francisco, California

Take it from someone who knows:
Practice before you propose.
’Cause I must confess,
She said no, not yes,
When I mentioned the size of her nose.
—Angie Gyetvai, Old Castle, Ontario, Canada

Our bachelor’s craving a wife,
But he can’t talk to girls in real life.
He addresses a picture
Of his buddy’s sister.
(That’s what they did before Skype.)
—Wendy Hyrkas, De Pere, Wisconsin

This is the way to propose:
By wearing his best Sunday clothes.
But down on his knees,
He started to sneeze,
Allergic to scent of a rose.
—Elaine Person, Orlando, Florida

He will ask her to marry him soon
By the light of a silvery moon.
First he’ll sing her their song,
But things could go wrong
’Cause the poor guy can’t carry a tune.
—Joyce Petrichek, Finleyville, Pennsylvania

The dry run needs tweaking, he thought
As he pondered the things he had brought.
The flowers and ring
Are great, but the swing
Of the arm might be over the top.
—Paul Desjardins, West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada

“Please be my bride!” the man pleaded,
But the photo looked on, quite unheeded.
But to win one so fair
As the one on the chair
Meant a full dress rehearsal was needed.
—Charles Moore Sr., Athens, Alabama

  1. Because of our publishing schedule, there is a two-issue lag between posting a limerick contest and posting the results of that contest — meaning that winners of the July/August contest will be announced in the November/December issue and online at the beginning of November.

However, if you’re asking about the winner of the March/April contest, which appears in the July/August issue, you can find her here: https://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2019/06/march-april-2019-limerick-laughs-winners-and-runners-up/

  2. I’m so pleased to have access to the Archive Gallery. What a great way to read about the culture of that time, and compare it to the culture of today. Such a wonderful way to time-travel. Thank you, Saturday Evening Post!
