James Preston (1873-1962) was born in Roxborough, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Preston was a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists who were known for painting scenes that reflected daily urban life. Preston was married to fellow artist May Wilson Preston. He painted seven covers for The Saturday Evening Post.
