Julius Moessel (or Mössel) (1871-1957) was born in Furth, Germany, and moved to Chicago in 1932. His paintings appear on three covers of The Saturday Evening Post.

From 1938 to 1940, as part of the WPA and the Federal Art Project, Moessel created 18 murals for the Chicago Field Museum’s “Plants of the World Exhibit.” The murals are still on display today. His art was also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery Biennial, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and is in the permanent collection of the Chicago Union League Club.
