Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Day

I don’t know about yours, but my calendar is filling up quick with whimsical holidays, ranging from Cheese Day to Merry-Go-Round Day to Fly a Kite Day. And while all those are important for living well, the following one really struck my fancy.

To celebrate the birthday of the late Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers), March 20 has been declared Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day. Neighbors across the nation are encouraged to wear their favorite sweaters; host neighborhood charity events; volunteer with local organizations; and participate in other activities to promote positive relationships within the community.

As Fred Rogers once said, “Imagine what our real neighborhoods would be like if each of us offered as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person. One kind word has a wonderful way of turning into many.”

How will you celebrate?

I recently moved to a new apartment. One of my biggest complaints about the apartment I lived in before was my very noisy neighbors. They actually managed to wake me up in the middle of the night a few times. Of course I’m sure I wasn’t the best neighbor either as I spent a good amount of time yelling at my dog to get off the couch or stop eating pie off the table. Now that I have a fresh start in a new place I’m hoping my neighbors will be quiet and I’m going to try very hard to extend the same courtesy to them. Because sharing walls is hard.

Oh and Heather you forgot Waffle Day.
