I agree with you, Gerard. I’d heard of too many people having skiing accidents starting from the time I was a small child to ever want to try it myself. Although these cartoons are funny, I believe it’s because they’re relatable being based on real incidents, unfortunately.
A lot of people don’t know (or remember) Lucille Ball broke her leg skiing on a trip in early ’72 following the filming wrap of the the ’71-’72 season of ‘Here’s Lucy’. Always the trooper, she shot a good many of the ’72-’73 season episodes in her wheelchair (still recuperating) for comic fodder. It also gave Lucie Arnaz a more important role and opportunity to showcase her comic talents.
So my favorites here are ALL OF THEM, especially # 5 (“I think I’ll just chicken out.”) and # 9 (“I wonder if you’d do the lodge a favor, sir…). “Please make yourself scarce down here by returning to your room. Room service will bring you all the booze you want, on the house!”
Considering that so many of the cartoons showed people as injured and the others showed people desperately trying to avoid injury it is a wonder that skiing ever took off as a sport.
