  1. A similar incident actually happened to me a few years back like was illustrated in the first cartoon from 1962. While they were at my home, my then-girlfriend’s 4 year old was learning how to use the phone. Somehow she managed to call 911 from one of the phones in the house without our knowledge. You can imagine our surprise when someone from our local rescue squad arrived unexpectedly and told us what happened.

  2. My favorite of this group is #5 down from ’61. Also #2 down from ’57. This one is relatable as I now mainly only get ‘who are you?’ solicitation calls on my iPhone. If they’re ‘missed calls’ and I push the button to call it, they’re disconnected or ‘non-working’ numbers. This is why I have to keep it on silent/vibrate almost all of the time.

With #4 down from ’55, it looks like he got a lot of junk calls while she was at the department store and was at his wits end. He really just needed to leave it off the hook. Maybe he did, and the beeping didn’t stop. A worn out pillow on top of the receiver might have done the trick there. Otherwise, I see a genuine landline where calls don’t get dropped, sound quality is way better, no worries how much power is left, and more.
