A really fascinating look at the very cute New Year’s babies Leyendecker painted for 35 years, as only he could. More often than not here though, the babies were dealing with some pretty serious stuff which he didn’t hesitate to express in their cherubic faces. Their innocence helped soften the blow of the dark reality that was just under the surface.
I’m sorry the Easter and Thanksgiving babies weren’t as popular; they were wonderful too. I love them all, but my favorite is the colorful 1/2/37 cover featuring the top hat and confetti.
