Computers from 60 years ago were a lot bigger, and just as perplexing.

  1. As a retired Information Systems Manager & Programmer/Analyst on IBM Systems 34, 36, 38, AS/400, iSeries, etc. I witnessed physical hardware and backup media downsize so much and efficiency increase with increased speeds and smaller storage. It’s amazing that is once took a large computer room to store the information now that can fit on your thumb. Amazing! It provided a good income for 35 years and path to early to retirement but I do not at all miss the stress associated managing a department, attempting to meet unreasonable deadlines, or being on call 24/7. I do not recommend what they call IT nowadays as a career path to any young person. I know my career interfered with my family life, contributed to my divorce and to an early age heart attack when I was just 48. It’s not a career that it’s all cracked up to be and certainly not worth all the money in the world when it comes to your health.
