Scenes from small-town America: Part of the Post’s fame rested on its reputation for capturing the scenes and spirit of America’s villages and towns. Norman Rockwell was just one artist who painted in this vein. Just as important was John Clymer, who painted the passing seasons of nature and life far from the city. In his landscapes, which ranged from suburbs to wilderness, he captured moments of picturesque childhood, tranquil nature, and family life — scenes presented as they’re recalled in happy memories. He specialized in aerial landscapes, as seen here, which enabled him to include more detail and an evocative stretch of landscape. Clymer’s Rural Wedding appeared on the May 29, 1954, cover of the Post.
