Claude S. Fischer is professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, author of Made in America: A Social History of American Culture and Character, and a regular columnist for the Boston Review. He wrote this essay for What It Means to Be American, a national conversation hosted by the Smithsonian Institution and Zócalo Public Square.
