The Problem with Self-Checkout Lanes
My supermarket has a half dozen self-checkout lanes. I’ve never used them.
I don’t want to work when I go shopping. I already help the cashier bag my groceries if it’s particularly busy and I’m buying a lot, but I don’t want to also have to scan everything. But the store seems to be relying heavily on these stations. There are always six of them open while there are only two regular checkout lanes open.
Inc. has a piece that explains why stores are cutting down on self-checkout and how the lanes created a problem companies didn’t expect: merchandise losses because of theft and incorrect scanning.
Of course, they factored in those things but not at the rate that they’re happening. And I report that this is true. When I’m waiting in the regular checkout lane, I constantly see mistakes and errors that happen to the customers using the self-checkouts. That’s why they have one or two employees standing there next to the self-checkouts, so they can help customers.
Of course, I think customers would be happier if those employees standing around just operated the regular registers.
Chicken & Waffles…Oreos?
I don’t know if I ever envisioned the words “chicken” and “Oreos” being in the same sentence, let alone the same recipe, but here we are, with Chicken & Waffles Oreos. According to Delish, they have “sweet and savory notes meant to mimic fried chicken and maple syrup.”
It’s one of three new cookies that Oreo has available for a limited time, along with Banana Pudding Oreos and Deep-Fried Oreos.
Hey, people have been deep frying Oreos on their own for years so it’s about time Oreo officially got in on things.
You can vote on which one stays in the lineup and returns in 2027. But hurry! Voting ends on Monday and the winner will be announced Tuesday!

This Week in History
Work Begins on Mount Rushmore (October 4, 1927)
Have you ever wondered why George Washington is the only president on Mount Rushmore to have any detail below his head? They ran out of money.
Project Mercury Approved (October 7, 1958)
The original name was Project Astronaut, but “The Astronaut Seven” isn’t as cool a name as “The Mercury Seven.”
This Week in Saturday Evening Post History: “Finding the Fork” by George Hughes (October 3, 1959)
I chose this cover because the trash rules where I live changed this week and it has been a pain.
Oreo Cookie Recipes (Of Course)
Let’s start at the official Oreo site, which has one of the best “accept all cookies” page I’ve ever seen. They have recipes for Oreo Peanut Butter Popcorn, this 5-Minute Oreo & Yogurt Cheesecake, and these Mini Oreo Blondie Basketball Bars.
Delish has Cookies ‘N’ Cream Millionaire Shortbread (I love regular Millionaire Shortbread and this sounds pretty good too) and a Classic Ice Box Cake.
What, you’re actually looking for something more savory to make with Oreos? Okay, how about the Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Oreos from Air Fryer Yum?
Next Week’s Holidays and Events
Thanksgiving (Canada – October 12)
So, does this mean that Canada’s Black Friday is Tuesday the 13th?
Dictionary Day (October 16)
Merriam-Webster has added 1400 new words to their dictionary, but a lot of people aren’t happy about the informal words/internet slang.
