Eileen Hopsicker managed her family’s thoroughbred operation and raised six children while juggling writing classes at Hamilton College. “Five in the Fifth” — inspired by her mother and a “crazy obsession with horses” — is her first short story to appear in a national publication, though she has published in newspapers and college periodicals. Calling herself a “late bloomer,” she is working on her first novel, The Balance of Justice, slated to hit bookstores in spring 2017 when she will be celebrating her 75th birthday.
