Many of our readers can remember a time when there were only three major television networks available, supplemented by local UHF stations, and all were free to watch. Our small-screen viewing options today bear little resemblance to that 20th-century model.
The big names in streaming — like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV — offer a panoply of old and new movies and TV shows, from vintage Westerns to modern Korean drama. They’ve got something for everyone.
But dozens of niche streaming services, focusing on specific genres, are also available. There are streamers for those who want, for example, more British television (BritBox, Acorn TV), documentaries and educational videos (Curiosity Stream, Magellan TV), or horror (Shudder, Screambox). And that just scratches the surface.
They all, of course, come with a price, and it’s a price some are willing to pay. How about you?
