Val Lauder was one of the first copygirls at the Chicago Daily News, as the war had shrunk the pool of boys so much that when she was hired in December 1944 she was asked if she "could start tomorrow." During her eight years there she would be featured in the Press sections of Time and Newsweek and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. In 2011 she retired from the School of Media and Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she taught feature writing for 30 years.
